Why Tattoo Healing Is Not Always Predictable in Singapore and What You Can Actually Control
Two people can get a tattoo from me, follow exactly the same aftercare, and still end up with slightly different healing. That is something nobody can fully promise you, and I would rather say it upfront than pretend otherwise. What I can do is show you what is in your hands. This post covers both: what is not predictable about tattoo healing, and the list of things you can control. If you want the day by day routine, my tattoo aftercare and healing guide goes through it step by step.
Why does tattoo healing not always go the same way?
A tattoo is a small wound, and every body heals a little differently. Your skin, the placement and your daily routine all play a part, and I cannot see under the surface while it heals. Some tattoos flake lightly and settle quietly. Others itch more, go cloudy or look patchy for a while before they settle. Both can be normal.
What can be different from person to person?
Your skin. How your skin holds ink and recovers is personal to you, and I cannot tell in advance how yours will respond.
The placement. A spot that bends, rubs against clothes or gets more sun can heal differently from a quiet spot like the inner arm.
Your daily life. Sweat, heat, clothing and routine all affect the area.
The type of work. Soft tonal work, which pet portraits are full of, can look cloudy or uneven partway through healing.
How long should I wait before judging my tattoo?
It takes about 1 to 1.5 months for a tattoo to fully settle. In the first couple of weeks it will look different from day to day, so a tattoo that looks dull, flaky or patchy at week two is not the final result. This is how a paw tattoo looked straight after the session, wiped clean and before any healing had started. It will not look like this a few weeks later, and that is expected.
What can I control while my tattoo heals?
You cannot decide how your skin responds, but you can decide how you look after it. This is the list I give my clients, so you know what to focus on.
What can I do before the session?
Tell me about anything on your skin, such as sensitivity, allergies or anything you are unsure about, so we can plan around it.
Choose the size and placement with healing in mind. My guide to pet portrait tattoo size and placement explains how I think about it.
Plan the weeks after. You will need to stay out of water for two weeks, so try not to book right before a beach trip or a swimming holiday.
What can I do in the first 24 hours?
Keep the second skin on for about 24 hours, and do not peel it early.
If it starts leaking or water gets in, take it off straight away and let the tattoo dry heal.
When it is time, peel it slowly under running water and rinse the tattoo gently.
What can I do over the following weeks?
Moisturise with an unscented lotion when the skin feels dry, and avoid thick products like Vaseline.
Do not scratch or pick. Picking at scabs can pull ink out and leave gaps.
Keep it out of water for two weeks. Quick showers are fine.
Light exercise is okay, but avoid stretching the area more than you need to.
Wear clean, loose clothing over it if you can, so nothing rubs. In Singapore's heat and humidity you will probably sweat more, so keep the area clean and dry.
What can I do once it has healed?
Judge it only after it has fully settled, not before.
Protect it from the sun. Singapore's sun is strong, and sunscreen helps keep a tattoo looking its best.
Message me if something does not look right. A complimentary touch-up is included if needed.
What should I do if my tattoo heals differently from what I expected?
Try not to panic, and do not try to fix it yourself. Take a clear photo and send it to me, along with how many days it has been since your session. Healing photos help me see what is going on. If the area becomes increasingly red, hot, swollen or painful after the first few days, or you notice pus, or you feel unwell with a fever, please see a doctor, and let me know too.
Frequently asked questions
Is it normal for my tattoo to look patchy or cloudy while it heals?
It can be, especially with fine tonal work like a pet portrait. Give it the full 1 to 1.5 months to settle before you judge it.
Can you guarantee exactly how my tattoo will heal?
No, and nobody can. What I can do is give you clear aftercare and a complimentary touch-up if it needs one once it has healed.
Is a touch-up included?
Yes. A complimentary touch-up is included if needed. Touch-ups on tonal work are normal and not a sign that anything went wrong.
When should I see a doctor?
If it becomes increasingly red, hot, swollen or painful after the first few days, if you see pus, or if you feel unwell with a fever.
